who shape who we are, who
help us grow and provide the
support we need to achieve
what we want.
I was reading Satya Nadella’s
letter to his team on his first
day as CEO of Microsoft, and
there was a paragraph that
stuck with me:
“I am 46. I’ve been married
for 22 years and we have 3
kids. And like anyone else,
a lot of what I do and how
I think has been shaped by
my family and my overall life
experiences. Many who know
me say I am also defined by
my curiosity and thirst for
learning. I buy more books
than I can finish. I sign up for
more online courses than I
can complete. I fundamentally
believe that if you are not
learning new things, you stop
doing great and useful things.
So family, curiosity and hunger
for knowledge all define me.”
The importance of family is
paramount in every individual’s
life, but when I talk about
family, I do not talk about it in
the traditional sense. Yes, our
immediate family does have a
strong role to play in how we
navigate life, but beyond that,
there are people who we come
to know as we move through
life who take on the role of
family members.
In this issue of GRIT, we talk
about our ventures who have
been inspired by their family
members
and
supported
by them as they navigated
the entrepreneurial space.
We also talk about those
who are working alongside
their families, building a
business together, and how
the professional and personal
relationships
overlap
and
correlate.
